Amethyst – February Birthstone & 6th Wedding Anniversary Stone

Amethyst has captivated humankind for centuries. The lilac-to-deep purple hues were once reserved for royalty or religious figures who wore it as a symbol of their important stature in society. Its lore comprises several claims to mystical powers, including that it would convey strength and wit to those who wore it. Amethyst was also associated with Bacchus, the ancient Greek god of wine, and wearing it was thought to keep the drinker sober. The most expensive color is an intense, deep, evenly colored purple and the least costly is pale lavender. Major sources of amethyst are Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Zambia.

Prasiolite, also spelled praziolite is the green form of quartz known as Green Amethyst. It is formed by iron content and heat. Prasiolite is also called vermarine. Prasiolite is the result of heat treating amethyst and citrine from sources in Brazil and Arizona. The sources for this gem of a gemstone have apparently run out.
The color of prasiolite varies from pale yellow green to that with the deeper shades of green and is sometimes confused with green beryl, peridot (olivine) and tourmaline. This stone is ideal for everyday wear and it is perfect for a wide variety of applications. The hardness of prasiolite is 7 on Mohs scale.

There is a natural prasiolite crystal from Brazil. The color varies from deep green to olive green.

Citrine - Alternate November Birthstone

Citrine – Alternate November Birthstone

Citrine is a yellow to golden member of the quartz mineral group. A deep golden variety from Madiera Spain can resemble the costly imperial topaz gemstone, which is why citrine is a popular birthstone alternative to those born in November.
Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although in actual fact it has very little in common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz - except for a few nuances of color. Thus the history of the citrine is closely interwoven with that of the topaz, and coincides with it completely when it comes to the interpretation of alleged miraculous powers. However, the citrine is a member of the large quartz family, a family which, with its multitude of colors and very various structures, offers gemstone lovers almost everything their hearts desire in terms of adornment and decoration, from absolutely clear rock crystal to black onyx. And it does so at prices that are affordable. The name is derived from the color - the yellow of the lemon -, although the most sought-after stones have a clear, radiant yellowish to brownish red. Like all crystal quartzes, the citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is insensitive to scratches. The yellow citrine has that mellow, warm tone that seems to have captured the last glow of autumn. Like golden Rhine wine or sparkling Madeira, heavy and sweet, citrine jewelry shimmers and brings a hint of sunshine to those dull November days. There are not many yellow gemstones in the world of jewels. However, the citrine fulfills everyone's color wishes, from lemon yellow to reddish brown.
Citrine has been called the “stone of the mind”. Ancient cultures believed that placing a citrine on the forehead of an elder would increase his psychic power. Citrine is known as the lucky “Merchants Stone”. If you are in any type of sales, just put a citrine in the cash drawer and “watch what happens”.
Healers, sometimes use citrine to help with digestion as it is considered to be beneficial to the endocrine and digestive system; cleansing, purifying and eliminating poisons that have built up in the system. Citrine is an excellent stone to calm and soothe distressed conditions. Some use it to help relieve depression and digestive problems. It will give joy and love to the owner.
Citrine comes from Brazil, Bolivia, several African countries and parts of the Soviet Union.

Orange topaz, also known as precious topaz, is the traditional November birthstone, the symbol of friendship, and the Utah state gemstone.
Imperial topaz is yellow, pink (rare, if natural) or pink-orange. Brazilian Imperial Topaz can often have a bright yellow to deep golden brown hue, sometimes even violet. Many brown or pale topazes are treated to make them bright yellow, gold, pink or violet colored. Some imperial topaz stones can fade on exposure to sunlight for an extended period of time. Blue topaz is the Texas state gemstone. Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare. Typically, colorless, gray or pale yellow and blue material is heat treated and irradiated to produce a more desired darker blue.
Ouro Prêto mines, in Brazil, produce orange to pinkish-purple topaz. Often the stone has been confused with the more common citrine (which is made by heating amethyst) found profusely in other Brazilian localities. In the early days topaz was the only gem of importance found near Ouro Prêto. Honoring Brazilian royalty, the gemstone was frequently referred to as “imperial” topaz. Later some sources called it “precious” topaz. Both terms have endured, partly because gem merchants wish to impart to customers the difference between gem topaz and citrine quartz.
Topaz can be found in all the colors of the rainbow and has been known to Man for at least 2000 years. It has not been proved beyond doubt whether the name comes from Sanskrit or Greek, though the Greek name 'topazos' means 'green gemstone'. The Romans dedicated the topaz to Jupiter
In mysticism, the topaz is attributed with a cooling, styptic and appetizing effect. It is said to dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears, to warn its wearer of poisons and protect him or her from sudden death. It is reputed to make men handsome and intelligent and sterile women fertile and happy. However, it is probably better not to rely too much on its magical powers, since it was also claimed that you could immerse your hand in boiling water after a topaz had been thrown into it and retract it again unharmed! In the Empire style, the topaz was still widespread, but then the more reasonably priced citrine took over from it and even usurped its name. Since then, the topaz has been a rather exotic figure in the jewelry trade, and has been given the additional predicate 'pure' to make it clear that the topaz, not the quartz topaz, is meant.

In translation, this means something like 'stone with mixed colours', referring to the colour spectrum of this gemstone, which outdoes that of all other precious stones. No two tourmalines are exactly alike. This gemstone has an endless number of faces, and for that reason it suits all moods. No wonder that magical powers have been attributed to it since ancient times. In particular, it is the gemstone of love and of friendship, and is said to render them firm and long-lasting.Crystals of only a single colour are fairly rare; indeed the same crystal will often display various colours and various nuances of those colours. And the trademark of this gemstone is not only its great wealth of colour, but also its marked dichroism. Depending on the angle from which you look at it, the colour may be different or more or less intense. It is always at its most intense when viewed looking toward the main axis, a fact to which the cutter must pay great attention when lining up the cut. This gemstone has excellent wearing qualities and is easy to look after, for all tourmalines have a good hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. So the tourmaline is an interesting gemstone in many ways.
A tourmaline of an intense red is known as a 'rubellite', but only if it continues to display the same fine ruby red in artificial light as it did in daylight. If the colour changes when the light source does, the stone is called a pink or shocking pink tourmaline.
Tourmalines are found almost all over the world. There are major deposits in Brazil, Sri Lanka and South and south-west Africa. Other finds have been made in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Tourmalines are also found in the USA, mainly in California and Maine. Although there are plenty of gemstone deposits which contain tourmalines, good qualities and fine colours are not often discovered among them. For this reason, the price spectrum of the tourmaline is almost as broad as that of its colour.

October Birthstone - Opal

Opal – October Birthstone

Opal has been called the Queen of Gems.
There are four types of gem opal:
WHITE OPAL is an opaque white that looks like porcelain. The colors appear as flashes, speckles, or sheets of rainbow colors. White opals are the kind most commonly seen in jewelry. Most white opal comes from Australia, mainly from the Andemooka and Coober Pedy deposits in South Australia.
BLACK OPAL also contains fire, but the body color is dark gray or black. This accentuates the color play, producing a dramatic effect. Black opals are extremely rare and costly. Black opal comes almost exclusively from Australia, the main deposit being at Lightning Ridge, New South Wales.
WATER OPAL is a transparent, colorless opal that contains brilliant flashes of color swimming within it.
FIRE OPAL is a translucent or transparent opal with a yellow to orange, or brilliant scarlet color. It is mainly found in Mexico and is sometimes called a Mexican Opal.
Descriptions are inadequate to describe the finest opals: a white, snowy landscape dotted with fireflies of red, gold, blue, purple and green; a black night streaked with rainbow lightning; the aurora borealis captured in stone. Mysterious, elusive, varied, and delicate, opal has been treasured since ancient times for its unique properties and beauty.
The ancient Romans had a passion for fine opals, and the Senator Nonius had one coveted by Marc Antony. Nonius was forced to choose either giving up the gem or exile from Rome; he chose the latter.
In the 17th Century a novel written by Sir Walter Scott, in which an opal played a malevolent role, “Anne of Geierstein”, caused the attitude toward opals to drop in popularity. A major part of the “bad luck” reputation is probably due to the tendency of opal to crack easily.

RUBY – July Birthstone
Ruby is derived from the Latin word “rubber” meaning “red”, the color of passion and is the most famous and fabled red gemstone. It is a most desirable gem due to its hardness, 9.0, durability, luster and rarity. Transparent large sizes are more rare than diamonds. Ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum, which is the mineral of Sapphires. Ruby is a red Sapphire. Because of its special allure and historical significance, Ruby has always been classified as an individual gemstone.
The color of Ruby ranges from bright red to dark reddish-brown. The most preferred color is a deep blood red with a slightly bluish hue. Such Ruby is known as "Burmese Ruby" or "Pigeon's Blood Ruby". Ruby from Burma is famous for its exceptional coloring, and has traditionally produced the finest RubiesInclusions of tiny, slender, parallel Rutile needles in Ruby cause a polished gem to exhibit asterism. A Ruby displaying asterism is known as a "Star Ruby", and if transparent can be very highly prized. Star Rubies exists in six ray stars, though twelve ray stars are also known. Rubies must have good transparency to possess gem value. Opaque or semi-opaque Rubies have relatively little value, even if they display asterism. The same Rutile inclusions that are responsible for asterism in certain Rubies can also decrease transparency and cause a hazy effect known as silk. Though Ruby can be one the most expensive gemstones, it also comes in more dull opaque forms that are fairly inexpensive, and are often polished into cabochons. A unique gemstone form composed of opaque red Ruby in contrasting green Zoisite is well known from Tanzania, and is used as a minor gemstone and can be carved into ornaments. The color of Ruby is usually caused by minute inclusions of the metal chromium. These impurities are often responsible for causing a Ruby to fluorescent, which can be helpful in its identification. Ruby is also pleochroic, and will sometimes display a lighter and more intense color when viewed at different angles.Ruby is a tough and durable gem, and the only natural gemstone harder than Ruby is Diamond. Despite this, Ruby is still subject to chipping and fracture if handled roughly, and care should be taken to ensure it is properly handled.

Pearl - June Birthstone

Pearl – June Birthstone
A pearl begins its life when a grain of sand or other small foreign object accidentally enters into an oyster’s soft inner body. It then becomes an irritation which causes a defensive action in the oyster. The cover the “irritant” the oyster produces a smooth liquid called nacre. Layer upon layer of this silky substance continues to cover the irritant, which results in a lovely, lustrous gem called a Pearl.
Cultured pearls are the same as naturally grown pearls. Oysters are collected and raised in a controlled environment to ensure their healthy growth. When they are mature, an irritant is intentionally introduced and the natural process of producing nacre takes its course.
In cultured salt-water pearls, a read of crushed and compacted mussel shell is placed inside the oyster as an irritant. These pearls are referred to as Akoya, which means, “salt water” in Japanese. Akoya pearls are somewhat more lustrous and rounder in shapes.
In cultured fresh-water pearls, a tiny bit of tissue gathered from a donor oyster, is placed inside the oyster as the irritant. Unlike the mussel shell, this irritant dissolves into the oyster, leaving behind microscopic nuclei. This means the pearls produced are composed almost entirely of nacre. They are not a coated bead, but a nearly solid composition of nacre.
Cultured freshwater pearls are available in much larger sizes from their saltwater counterparts. Although available in white, they have the unique quality of all natural colors, including apricot, orange and plum purple. These pearls are grown largely in China, where the process of fresh water cultivating has been practiced since the 13th century.
The Pearl has been treasured as a symbol of wealth and social status. It continues to be the cornerstone of classic style, culture and refinement.

Whether or not one believes in the symbolism of birthstones, it is obvious they represent the mysterious, magical, and unparalleled beauty of mother earth.
Blue zircon was very popular in the first half of the twentieth century, but as cubic zirconia gains in popularity, the zircon has become harder to find in fine jewelry. Nevertheless, it does exist and is seen in rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and pendants. The splendor and beauty of blue zircon gemstones makes them very popular and reasonably priced compared to most other precious stones.

A Must Visit Location When You Are in Florida

From beautiful tourmalines and stunning emeralds to the finest quality 14 and 18 karat gold, you’ll be more than impressed with the selection at Gold In Art Jewelers. Shades of Gold
White gold, rose gold, and green gold – what’s in them??
All gold is yellow. Twenty-four-karat gold – pure gold – is a rich and bright yellow. Considered too soft to be used in most jewelry, 24-karat gold will be alloyed with other metals for wear ability.
Eighteen karat gold is 18 parts pure gold and six-part alloy or 75 percent gold and a 25 percent alloy mix.
Fourteen karat gold, the most common form used in jewelry in the United States, is 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts alloy, or 58 percent pure gold.
The lower the karat, or purity of the gold, the less yellow the color. The many types of metals that are added into the mix determine the precise shade.
Rose/red gold: sometimes called “pink gold”, rose gold may seem more exotic than yellow or white. The amount of copper used as an alloy is what gives rose gold it pink or red tinge.
White gold: adding white metals to the gold makes it white. The most common alloys added are silver, platinum, palladium, zinc and nickel.
Green gold: adding copper and white metals will create green gold.
Regardless of color, prices are still comparable to white or yellow gold.

Sapphires come in many colors, however, blue is the most popular color and the rarest are the rich, medium royal blues. Natural untreated sapphires are in a class of their own and are always more valuable. Along with diamonds, sapphire is the hardest of all gems. It is scratch resistant and not prone to chipping and breaking. Sapphire rings and bracelets can be worn and enjoyed every day without fear of damaging the stones.

Diamond jewelry Only: bring a pot of water and a couple of drops of dishwashing soap to a boil. Put diamond jewelry in a strainer in the pot so that it doesn' hit the metal. Soak for several minutes, then rinse.

Amethyst, Aquamarines, Emeralds, Garnets, Jade, Sapphires, Rubies, Topaz and Tourmalines: Add 1 tablespoon to one-half cup of warm water. Immerse jewelry and scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse in clear water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Pearls: Clean each one individually. Rub gently with a soft chamois cloth dampened in a mild soap and water solution. Then rinse and buff with a flannel cloth. The best way to condition real pearls is to wear them often and next to your skin. Their surface is improved as they absorb natural skin oils. You can get much of the same effect by rubbing a little olive oil over the pearls. Then wipe dry with a chamois cloth.

Costume Jewelry: To prevent metal costume jewelry from tarnishing, store it with a piece of white chalk.

Flags fly at American Legion Post 347 as Cmdr. Tom Murphy gets set to open the post. [Bill Mitchell, Daily Sun]

A post with purpose
By AZIA LI FORREST,DAILY SUN
LADY LAKE — Following months of organization, dedication and patience, members of American Legion Post 347 hosted a ribbon-cutting and rededication for their newly renovated headquarters.“It’s been a long project to get this far and this is the culmination of it,” Post 347 Commander Tom Murphy said.
Monday afternoon, Post 347 families, friends and guests were invited to tour the new facility.Following was a ceremony, led by past commander Bill Walsh, who recognized the entire Post 347 family — including volunteers.Completion of the much-anticipated construction added 6,500 square feet to the existing 7,000-square-foot building on Rolling Acres Road.“May we again dedicate our organization, remembering that the American Legion service is for God and our (country),” Murphy said during the ceremony. “As in time of war, we fight for our country, so that in time of peace we may serve the country — fearlessly and well. I dedicate this structure to the purposes of our post, and with it I dedicate this post to the faithful servants of our nation, its people and to the memory of their heroic deaths.”
Florida State Commander Phil Hearlson of Summerfield assisted Murphy with the ceremonial ribbon-cutting before the doors were officially opened.“It’s gratifying to see (past) commanders here, on this occasion,” Hearlson said. “They were instrumental at this post. I remember a couple of years ago when they had 1,700 members; today, it is about 2,900. They are active in the community, they all work together as a family, but seeing this — what people have shown through dedication — is important. This is how the American Legion works, and I salute you for this.”One of those past commanders present was Joseph Berube, who was the driving force behind the headquarters’ first renovation nearly 20 years ago.“I remember trying to get land so that it could get built,” the Village of Country Club Hills resident said. “I buckled down, stood my guns and said we were going to add on to the hall.”
