Peridot is surrounded by superstition. It was once thought that it could break evil spells. The gem was associated with the sun, whose rays gave life and dispelled the mysteries of the darkness. Peridot is a warm, soft olive or yellowish-green gem with a hardness of 6-7 on the Mohs scale. It is sometimes referred to as the "Evening Emerald" because under artificial light the peridot glows a brilliant green. Fine peridot with a pleasing color comes from Arizona and the Mogok District of Burma as well as Africa and Australia. The best color is green with no tinge of brown or yellow.
